Post Polio Support Group

Post Polio Syndrome
Polio has been eradicated from nearly every country in the world since the development of the Salk and Sabin vaccines. A 1994 survey reported a preliminary estimate of one million survivors in the United States.

By the late 70's, polio survivors were noting new problems of fatigue, pain, and additional weakness. In the early years, health professionals often attributed these symptoms to psychological problems. However, by the middle of the 1980's, the medical field began to realize that these new problems were real. The disease itself is not returning, but new issues are affecting some survivors decades after they contracted polio. The exact reason is still not definitively known, but research continues.

Reno Support Group
The post polio support group allows members to share concerns and exchange information with others that may be experiencing similar symptoms and problems. The group meets on a quarterly basis in the Reno area. For more information, telephone Charlott Serline at (775) 322-6555.
